morning practice

sunrise

each morning when i rise, my eyes seek the tibetan prayer flags that hang in my backyard.

bathed by sun

drenched in rain

blown by wind

or covered in snow

each set is an impermanent, yet beautiful, constant in my life.

snow fall

earlier, i made these wishes for you, for all sentient beings and for me (i have learned that this is not an act of selfishness, but rather an act of self love).

may i be happy

may all beings be happy

may i know peace

may all beings know peace

may i move through the world with an open heart

may all beings move through the world with an open heart.

in peace,
mary jane

do you have a special way you begin your day?

  1. Beautiful -

In the colder seasons, I light the woodstove and sit for a bit in the quiet as the snaps and crackling begins. If I am good and mindful, I thank the trees for their lives that I may be warmed. But often these days, after months of starting the morning fire, I'm lax at that. But there is ever a great gratitude in my heart for the morning fires. Even on days when I am rushing to get out of the door by 7:30am, and get the fire good and stoked for the whold day I'll be gone.... those days the morning fire is almost more precious - a grounding force before I drive and talk and run around and lecture students on this and that. I have a few moment to sit with Pasha cat and BE with fire.

  2. MJ - I love these images - what a wonderful place. We start our day quietly as well, sipping a lime juice we squeeze from the fruit of our trees, and then choosing a word from our daily words to reflect on and ponder and consider thru the day. Sometimes it guides us, sometimes it reminds us, sometimes it challenges us...it is a reflective way to start the day. I ike your words as well - gentle strong and caring.

  3. Beautiful images. I don't have a special ritual other than a bowl of cheerios while watching the morning news. But I've had so much turmoil in my life going on about 10 years now. It's time for me to think of myself and my own mental health and physical health, so I'm wanting of earning how to meditate. I love the words you shared and I think they will be just the perfect way to start the day. Thanks for sharing!!!

  4. Soothing post, thanks Mary Jane.
If I wake in time I like to start the day sitting on the back step watching the sun come up. I've seen many beautiful unexpected things at this time. We have Loeries in the forest. We hear them but don't often see them. A few months ago a pair flew out of the trees and actually "danced" in the open air, right in front of me for at least a minute while I watched in absolute awe.
